Proper Nutrition for a Puppy

Posted on May 19th, 2012 by admin in Puppy Food

Proper nutrition for a puppy is easily managed with just a few basic tips. All puppies, unless otherwise contradicted by the Vet, should be fed a food that is one hundred percent nutritionally complete. All dog foods that can claim this will have the words printed on the bag or can, although the ingredients may vary greatly.  You should look for dog food with meat products on the label.  If you are unsure what type of dog chow to feed your new puppy, you can always check with the Vet for his or her advise on the matter.

Most Vets recommend that puppies be given dry dog food with possibly a small amount of canned food mixed in. This will ensure that the puppy gets the proper nutrition and nutrients he needs and also gets the benefit of eating hard food to help keep their teeth clean. Eating only canned food may cause tooth

decay unless the puppy is also given treats that are specifically designed to help keep tartar from building up.

Many time certain breeds of dogs must be fed specific foods while they are still young. Small breeds such as Yorkshire Terriers may require very tiny pieces of kibble mixed with a wet form of food. Because their mouths are so tiny, along with their teeth, it would be nearly impossible for a Yorkie to be able to chew dog food pellets that are large. Another example of proper nutrition for a puppy or specific breed is that of the Great Dane. Great Dane puppies grow at a rapid rate of speed. If they are not fed the proper type of dog chow it can wreck havoc with their bones, causing them to grow too quickly and become weakened. If you have any questions about which type of food is best for your new puppy, you can always call your local Vet for advise.
