How Big Will My Puppy Get?

A question a lot of new puppy owners ask themselves is “how big will my puppy get?” The answer to this question is pretty easy if the dog is a purebred.  Though standards do dictate size in purebreds, some individual dogs may vary somewhat.  If you want a really good indicator of the size of your new pup, just check the size of the parents.  If you are selecting a dog the right way and not buying from a puppy mill/pet store, you should be able to see the parents on the site when you purchase your new dog.  If you are getting a rescue dog or puppy, then let me first congratulate you on helping a puppy/dog that has been abandoned find a home.

If your dog is a crossbred then you might have a harder time assessing how big will my puppy get.  This will be especially true if the situation has neither the parents or the age of the pup.  You can make an estimate based on these calculations.

You can look at paw size, as with humans big feet will usually indicate a larger height and weight.

Loose skin can also be an indicator, the more loose skin the more room the dog will have to grow into his suit and the larger he will become.

I promise I didnt do it!

My favorite way to calculate  is the double it formula.  Whatever your dog weighs at 14 weeks, just double it to get your dogs adult weight.  Now the height of a dog is usually calculated by an estimation.  The height of your pup will be 75 percent of its adult height at 6 months of age.

If you use all the above factors, you should be able to make a reasonable guess of  your pups estimated height and weight when he reaches his maturity. You can also access the American Kennel Club by clicking this link–>AKC

They have a list of registered breeds and all the information pertaining to that breed of dog including height and weight.

I hope this information will help you find the size of the dog you have brought into your home.  If you have other questions, that pertain to “How big will my puppy get”, or any other puppy related question just leave a comment, as I am here every day.  I would love to hear from you.

One other question I get asked often is what dog food I recommend. I try to stay away from foods that contain a lot of corn and other fillers. For more information check out my article Here
